Practices (Materials provided by Frozen Ropes)

Practice Organization - Tips
  1. Use a whistle - Important tool in maintaining attention
  2. Itinerary - Come prepared with a plan
  3. Multiple stations - Work with the kids in smaller groups practicing different skills / Rotate after pre-set time limit
  4. "No walking" - Players should be running from station to station and all during practice
  5. Fun Factor - IT'S A GAME
  6. Know what age group you are dealing with - Teach concepts in a manner appropriate to age group coaching
  7. Extra time with players - See if you can allocate a few extra minutes before or after regular practice to help the players who may need a little extra effort
  8. Meeting place - Set a meeting place for the team to go when the whistle sounds
  9. Use cones, markers - Visual tools help emphasize points
  10. Help from Other Coaches/Parents - Use all the volunteers to help you out as possible
  11. 90-120 minute practice - Limit practice time to 1:45. Attention begins to wane after 2 hours
  12. Team talk at beginning - Have a team talk at the beginning of practice to let the players know what will be covered in practice today
  13. Teach to everyone - Show everyone what you are talking about during regular practice
  14. YOU ARE NOT JOE TORRE - !!!
  15. Practice more, scrimmage less - When you scrimmage you have 1 person batting and 10 other players standing around most of the time
  16. Practice throwing the ball to first and second - Most of your out are made to these bases
  17. Throw grounders and fly balls - Easier to get the ball where you want it / Plus players will be less likely to be intimated by a thrown ball
  18. More touches equals more confidence
  19. Instill confidence - More Confidence = Greater Success
  20. Demonstrate - Show the players what you are trying to teach them
  21. You set the pace of practice
